Chinese Picture Books 3

I have been searching for good Chinese chapter books that Chloe will love to read. I finally received these very nice books from www.dangdang.com today.

露露和拉拉(4册)
http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=20599286
This series of 4 books is very suitable for girls age 6 to 9. The reading level is equivalent to our P3 or P4. The stories are about 2 girls who operate a bakery shop. The pictures are very cute. Kids who cannot read independently will be attracted to the nice pictures of mouthwatering cupcakes, cookies, jelly, etc, and will be motivated to read the book with the help of their parents. Click on the photos to view the bigger image.

什么都行魔女商店(全四册)
http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=20469456
This series of 4 books is also very suitable for primary school girls. The reading level is equivalent to our P4 level, but I think with help from parents, lower primary kids should enjoy reading this series. It is about a 魔女, a girl with magical powers. She is eccentric, but kind hearted. The stories are interesting, and teach good values like helping people in need, perseverance, etc.

小猫当当系列(10 books)
I bought this series for Jerome who is 5 years 3 months old. He is not reading as fluently as Chloe, so I want to get him books which have nice pictures and few words. The stories are suitable for 2 to 5 years old. Chloe, now 6 years old, like these books too !

Hi Tamarind,
Thank you for your generosity on sharing how and which chinese books to buy. Will try to buy from dangdang once i received the T-Pin from Citibank.
Could u also share how do u handle your girl when she keep asking questions non-stop or when she throws a trantrum. My girl is undergoing this stage now....
Thks in advance.

You are welcome !

My girl has passed through that stage when she was 2 to 3 years old. I had to be very firm. The trick is never give in to any of her requests when she was throwing a tantrum. She must put on her best behaviour if she wants to get anything. It takes time for her to improve, by the time she is 4 years old, she is fine.

As for questions, I do encourage her to ask as many questions as she likes, and I try my best to answer her.

*Phew* its really not easy to handle kids between 2-3 yrs old coz they are so emotional.By the way, was ur girl ok (no sobbing or clinging on u) when she first started Pre-N last time.

"Can I check how do I buy from dang dang?"

You must activate Secure Online Shopping for your Citibank Credit Card. Read this webpage for more information.
Secure Online Shopping

You will need to setup a personal message and password. For example, you setup a personal message : Hello flower, and password flower123.

At the dangdang payment page, after you enter your credit card number, you will be connected to the Citibank server, and your personal message "Hello flower" will be shown, and you need to enter your password flower123.

Note that if your payment fails to go through for whatever reason, you need to enter all your items into the shopping cart again and check out a new order. You can cancel your previous order, or it will be automatically canceled after a few days.

Sometimes the Citibank server may have problems, you may have to try again the next day, or you can try to reset your Secure Online Shopping password.

It is not easy to get through when you are ordering for the first time, you need to keep trying. But it is well worth the effort. There is a huge collection of Chinese books at dangdang with many books that cannot be found in Singapore, and the prices are cheap.

Hi Tamrind,
Can i check which shipping service u used? how long it take to reach singapore? Thanks in advance !!!

Tamarind said...

I used the direct shipping by dangdang.com. Just place the order, enter my address in Singapore, and they send to me directly.

The shipping charge is 50% of the original price before discount.

Note that many books are heavily discounted. For example :
Original price : RMB 40
Discounted price : RMB 20(50% off)
Shipping : RMB 20 (50% of RMB 40)

Hi Tamarind

How to you decide which books to buy, given the large selection of books at dangdang? As you mentioned, some of the books are quoted for 3-5 yrs old, but in Singapore, it is more for P2 or P4.

I just buy all the books that have nice pictures and good stories. Chloe, now in P1, is able to read all the books included in my blog, she only needs help with about 10% of the words.

Jerome, now in K2, does not know enough words to read Chinese books independently yet, so we are reading the books to him. He enjoys looking at the pictures of all the books.

Hi Tamarind

Me again:)

Would you recommend Ji Chu Han Zi (the one you bought from popular) or 四五快读 to start teaching Chinese?

Popular online doesn't seem to have Ji Chu book anymore, and I also can't find the 西游记 chapter books you mentioned.

Tamarind said...

Ji Chu Han Zi is out of stock and I heard Popular will not be bringing the books in any more.

四五快读 books are better, kids will be able to read about 80% of the Chinese newspapers after they learn all the words in the series.

西游记 should still be available in some Popular bookshops here.

I will be buying another cartoon series of stories from 西游记 :
美猴王

I will post my review in my blog when I get the books.

Hi Tamarind

JUst to check how to order from dangdang. Do you key in your address in English, or do you translate to Chinese? What about the name part?

The 1st book of 四五快读 is out of stock in dangdang and amazon china. Do you have any other websites where I can buy? Can't wait, plus a lot of spreeists buying the same book too, so I am afraid it may be out of stock for a long time.

Tamarind said...

You can write the address in English.

Yes book 1 is out of stock at dangdang. I don't know of any other websites that has that book. The stocks may come in soon at dangdang.

hi Tamarind,

do u mean we can only order from dangdang with Citibank Credit Card & not other banks' cc?

Tamarind said...

DBS Amex card is also accepted and it is easier to use.

Dangdang uses the Secure Online Shopping by Visa, and the only card that has this feature in Singapore is Citibank. Please read more from the Visa website :

Hi, Tamarind,

Thank you for your recommendation of 什么都行魔女商店. I found 4 books of this series in library. My 5 yo dd loves to read them very much.

Your effort and achievement in Chinese education to your kids is inspiring. Got to know that you also stay in Jurong West. We too.
Welcome you to visit my blog http://zhoumanlin.spaces.live.com/, too.

Hi,
My daughter read 魔女宅急便, written by Japanese author 角野荣子. The book is about a witch girl learning how to live independently, the story is wonderful and I highly recommend it to all girls. There is a total of 5 books in the series. The difficulty level is about P6 to secondary school. My girl read it in P2. I think that primary school kids who have been reading Chinese novels regularly should be able to read it.

I also highly recommend 小男生杜歌飞 and 小女生金贝贝 by 杨红樱.

Thank you very much for your compliments.

My greatest wish is for all children learning Chinese in Singapore to develop a love for the language, and to be able to use the language throughout their lives. Learning Chinese should not only be about getting good grades in exams.
