The author writes about her real life experience of raising her daughter. I especially like the part where she wrote about how she enticed her daughter to read Chinese books. Click on the following photos to read :

The author wrote that she bought a very interesting Chinese book and started reading the book herself. Then she talked to her daughter about how good the book was, and described parts of the story to the girl. When she came to the very exciting parts, she told her daughter that she was going to stop there for the day. Her daughter wanted to know what happened next, so she picked up the book and started to read it herself.
I also like this section about selecting books that are interesting for the child to read :
The author has written a lot more about her experience in her book. She is a teacher so she also writes about her experience with other children. I think the author has given great advice.
I am a big fan of the Jin Yong (金庸) novels, and I read all of his novels when I was 14 to 15 years old. I also read all the Qiong Yau and Yi Shu novels. Thanks to all these books, I was able to do very well for Chinese right up to A levels, and I only had to spend very little effort learning Chinese.
Since the standard of Chinese in Singapore is very low compared to China, few kids here will be able to read 金庸 novels in primary school. We can try many other interesting books for our kids. Check out these pages for wonderful Chinese books :

hi Tamarind,
may i know if yr gal's primary school states their student's position in class in their report book?
Hi anxiousmummy,
My girl's school does not show the ranking of the students.
Hi Tamarind,
Firstly, many thanks for your recommendations. I found 2 books with the same title "hao mama sheng guo hao lao shi" - one by xing miao2 and the other by yi jianli - may i check with you which is the one you read ?
BTW, just to let you know (altho i'm sure a lot of mummies have told you so alr), i totally enjoy reading your blog and appreciate your recommendations. I often wonder where on earth you find time to do so much for your kids (as a working mother). Perhaps having a good maid and mother to help helps ? Anyway, keep blogging and enriching your kids....

It is the one by Yi Jian Li.
I am happy to know that you enjoy reading my blog.
Yes my mother and my maid really help me a lot. Without them, I definitely will not be able to manage.
hi Tamarind,
I was so enthuastic to teach my child (3 yrs old) to learn to read in Chinese after reading your blog.
However, my child is now more keen and better in reading Chinese than English books though we read English books too, do you think there will be a problem next time.
Thanks from KS mummy.
Dear KS Mummy,
There is no problem if you spend about the same amount of time teaching both English and Chinese.
My older girl, now 7 years old, can read long English chapter books like Charlotte's Web at 5 years old.
Checkout my phonics and reading blog :
http://tamarindphonics.blogspot.com
Now at P1, she is also able to read long Chinese chapter books. Thanks to her Berries class and the Si Wu Kuai Du series of books.
All I have done is to spend about 15 to 30 mins teaching her to read in each language, since she was 4 years old. I am doing the same for my 6 year old boy and he is also doing well in 2 languages.
It is definitely possible to raise a bilingual child who is good in both languages ! The key is to start from 3 years old like what you have done :)
Hiee Tamarind,
Can I check with you how much did you pay for 好妈妈胜过好老师 ?
Thank you
Adeline
Hi Adeline,
I paid about S$7.00 for the book, direct shipping from dangdang.com.
Thanks. I suppose S$7.00 is inclusive of shipping.
Just gotten one at Tampines NTUC - S$12.00
Yes $7.00 includes shipping.
legendThat is cheap!
Thank you for your reply.

Hi xman,
I know that OCBC cards will work for sure. But citibank cards gave me lots of problems before.
Was the error message in Chinese ? If it is, then your transaction may have been successful. I encountered the error messages before, but the payment actually went through.
Check your credit card transaction details online and see if your card has been charged.
You can also email dangdang.com to check. Their email address is service@cs.dangdang.com.
If there are extra transactions, just email dangdang.com and they will refund you.
